(Regarding the links) Ah, I should have looked at the manual a little more 
closely, I remember this (vaugely) from the last time I set the system up.

Right, I have changed the links into the server mode, and tried the manual 
restart as you suggested.

I had also forgotten that my Networker files on the shared partition are 
in /clutape1/nsr not /clutape1, so I modified the symbolic link accordingly.
(I have some 'file' type volumes stored under other directories 
in /clutape1, that is why Networker is under a subdir.)

The system now appears to have started up according to the Networker 
daemon.log.

It hung for a long time (10 minutes) checking a client index for dbravo (A 
Windows 2000 server).

As far as I can tell it has started, but the nwadmin GUI doesn't connect.
It just says 'server unavailable'

I will now try an automatic startup again, and let you know.
