You can't "change" it.  Delete and recreate the device with the type you
want.

I would expect zero difference in behavior or performance after you
change it.  Networker doesn't care what type of tape is on the back
end.  It's really just naming it for your benefit (and to keep track of
what tapes go where).  If you have existing volumes, they will retain
the 'lto' type.  I don't know if you can mount them on a 'lto3' drive.
