Fsck always matters. Eventually you'll either go down hard enough that
the journal can't fix it or you'll need to do an automatic or scheduled
fsck check for sanity reasons.
ext3's performance isn't great, JFS may be a better choice
JFS doesn't shrink. That could be an issue if you need to shrink an LVM
with it on there.
