Hello,

I'm having trouble getting a Sun box (Solaris 9) to recognize a
Storagetek L80 tape library and its devices, or at least I think I am. I
hooked up the library (generation 1 LTO drives @4) to this sun via an
Adaptec 39160 dual channel Ultra 160 card. There are two LVD SCSI
cables. Cable 1 connects picker and drives 1-2 to channel A on card.
Cable 2 connects drives 3-4 to channel B. All connections are tight.
Recycled power on library before rebooting host. Next, ran 'boot -rv'
from Ok prompt on host. No warnings or errors were generated on reboot,
although a lot of encryptic messages did pop up. Checked /dev/rmt after
reboot, and it's empty! Does Solaris 9 build tape devices elsewhere?

Checked /var/adm/messages and ran 'dmesg', but nothing obvious about
tape devices stood out. Hmmm ... I'm wondering if maybe the adapter card
needs to be configured? This library was formerly running on a Linux
host and worked there, but on Linux you have kudzu which automates card
configuration process (always reasonably easy). Not sure how to do this
on Solaris or how to determine if it's been done or needs to be?

Anyone have any ideas on why I'm not seeing any tape devices and what I
should do?

I should note that I did run 'strings /kernel/drv/st | grep -i lto'
before I did anything, and Seagate LTO ULTRIUM is listed, and we have
Seagate LTO drives, so would appear the st driver is good to go?

Thanks in advance

George
