I'm not sure about config checking, but I've found running the failing service with '-f' (run in foreground) to be invaluable (and far better at telling you what's going on that Systemd seems to be able to manage). For example:

sudo bacula-dir -f

Hello all.

I'm having a bit of issue with my bacula installation. Still doing some
testing so I get an idea of how to make it work properly before deploying it
in our servers

I've been following the DigitalOcean tutorial and how to do basic
installation and configuration; backing up and restoring locally(localhost.
The sd, fd and dir are in the same VM) works just fine with a pretty much a
default installation and configuration. The problem starts when I add the
functions to include remote clients.

I set up the bacula-dir.conf, bacula-sd.conf and the client's bacula-fd.conf
as shown in the tutorial. When I check for inconsistencies with *bacula-dir
/etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf* it doesn't show any error, but when it's time
to restart the service, it fails with no specific error message or location
other than *"Bacula-dir - The configtest failed"* and to check journalctl
-xe.

I check the journal but it doesn't show much in the way of what might be
wrong

"/Failed to start LSB: Start Bacula Director at boot time.
0m
-- Subject: Unit bacula-director.service has failed
-- Defined-By: systemd
-- Support: https//www.debian.org/support
--
-- Unit bacula-director.service has failed.
--
-- The result is failed.
sep 08 16:46:37 bacula systemd[1]: bacula-director.service: Unit entered
failed state./"

I have run through the configuration files a few times now, checking for
mismatching passwords and such but everything seems just fine.

This is the tutorial in question
