Heitor, Josip,

Thanks for the replies. That does make sense.

I don't see a huge benefit at the moment from doing differential backups. Most
of the data which is backed up is not changing but being added to ( so volumes
are getting bigger due to additional files). In the video its explained that if
same files are being changed then there is not much benfit in terms of space
saving for incremental. One thing I didn't understand is why would one do
incremental AND diff backups? Surely only one should be the strategy right?

In theory do incremenal backup will take much less time?

But as you mention restore will be slower. Need to weigh the pros and cons.

In my opinion, yes it should be fine but your restore will be a bit slower.

Differential backups are valuable feature when you are dealing with tapes as
this would decrease the number of tapes that need to be changed while restoring
the complete system or huge bunch of files located on a number of different
tapes.

If you are using only files as volumes you could still benefit from the
differential backup but it wouldn't be significant as in the case of tapes.

If you are trying to speed up your backup make sure that you are not using
spooling data feature which doesn't make much sense if you are using file
volumes exclusively.
