Solved I think:
10-May 21:05 VLNBackup-dir JobId 3017: Start Backup JobId 3017, Job=NAS1_TV.2014-05-10_21.05.12_38
10-May 21:05 VLNBackup-dir JobId 3017: Using Device "eSATA-drive-0" to write.
10-May 20:55 vulcans-sd JobId 3017: 3304 Issuing autochanger "load slot 119, drive 0" command.
10-May 20:56 NAS1-fd JobId 3017: Fatal error: job.c:2395 Bad response to Append Data command. Wanted 3000 OK data
, got 3903 Error append data

10-May 20:55 vulcans-sd JobId 3017: Fatal error: 3992 Bad autochanger "load slot 119, drive 0": ERR=Unknown error during program execvp.
Results=failed to rename volume file while loading drive 0 from slot 119

so I deleted the drive0 file on the drive and the job started.

the job is 6tb worth of data so it will be a few days before I see results will start a new thread if it doesn't complete.

are all your SD and DIR on the same version?
