Normally, under FreeBSD, you will have a ch device for your autoloader, which 
you should use instead.  E.g.,

tape# camcontrol devlist
<QUANTUM ULTRIUM 4 2210>           at scbus0 target 8 lun 0 (sa0,pass0)
<QUANTUM UHDL 0075>                at scbus0 target 8 lun 1 (ch0,pass1)
[[...]]


The chio command uses /dev/ch0 by default.
