I can't speak from experience about how the defaults act. I tend to explicitly 
state what options are even if they are the defaults. 

In my experience using the options
Allow Duplicate Jobs = no
Cancel Lower Level Duplicates = yes

the flow chart depicted in figure 17.2 properly reflects what happens in my 
environment.
