I think Francisco's solution seems very elegant for a situation where
tapes don't need to be shared between hosts.

I've developed a crude system which might be another approach if you are
mainly working with Full backups, which is to snapshot the catalog
associated with a job so that the particular job can easily be
recreated in another Postgresql instance. Let me know if you are
interested in that.

Following a brief discussion with Avi Rozen, who has developed the
baculafs "catalog file system" I'm thinking of working on this more to
make per-job sqlite dumps from Postgres to make entirely self-contained
job catalogues, and to provide a facility to make a bootstrap file
directly from either the Postgres or the job catalogue db. But that is
unlikely to be relevant here!
