Thanks to everyone that responded to me about this. I am backing up to
portable USB drives and it is TOO easy for somebody to walk out the door
with the backup disk. I had to have encryption.

I succeeded in building my own packages for Debian Lenny and Ubuntu
Intrepid. I wrote a script to fetch the current Debian or Ubuntu
source, update the debian/rules to add --with-openssl, and build the
packages. I built them on virtual machines running the appropriate
distribution. I made another script to create my own http repository
for these packages and sign the repository with my own signing key. The
repository is available on the internet. I apt-pinned my versions on my
clients so they won't be automatically updated.

If anybody wants the address of my repository and the fingerprint for
my key please let me know.

I would also be happy to provide the scripts for anybody that wants to
build their own packages/repository.

Bill
