Well, part of the problem is that %s and %S are not properly documented.
The documentation as-is is misleading.

%S should be documented as "slot as-is listed in the catalog
%s should be documented as "slot as-is listed in the catalog, minus one"

Which is not necessarily "the slot index in your changer, minus one"

If it worked as-documented, and the original spec development hadn't
occurred on a GNU/Linux platform, %S would increment your catalog value
by one (to match what most drive manufactures physically label, but fuck
them)

Which is not what we have here.  Your catalog slot index will always
match up with what your OS's SCSI layer changer utility indexes from,
which, hopefully, will be 0 (per the spec).

For GNU/Linux users, they'll have to index/label from 1, which sucks for
them, but they knew what they were getting into when they fired up that
Ubuntu LiveCD.
