I have my backups organised so that the backup of the small files runs 
concurrently with the backup of large (10G+ files) files, which are on a 
different system and RAID array. These large files get good sequential 
read speeds which should keep the data rata sufficient high so that shoe 
shining is avoided. I hope :)

I will experiment with spooling in the near future, however.
