As I said, it's worked perfectly for me. Hundreds of backups and every
restores later and no problems whatsoever.

I'd be interested to know why you think this. The only reason I can
understand that happening is if the tape is shoe shining.

I may try a 1 or 2GB tmpfs spool directory though.
