you are right - my
proposal would not encrypt the metadata like filename and path, at least
not without additional efforts.

Encryption of the underlying filesystem on the remote end
would not do the
job because data are readily accessible as long as the
filesystem is mounted.
I would like encryption on the local end with a key that is
kept local and
a salt, e.g. the md5 checksum of the file. This ensures
encryption already
when file is in transit. For my setup, this would require
getting in
between reading the local file and transferring the then
encrypted file via
rsync (similar principle for restoring file).
