Of course, the *real* better way to go is rsync. That's
what I use in 95% of instances; only if I can't make rsync work for
some reason do I use SMB.
Of course, there's no rsync on the i. However:

I don't know if you can run it as a *server* (for
rsyncd, which is what I use), or what would be involved in using SSH (for
rsync over ssh, which is what others use), but it too is worth a consideration.
How much data are you trying to back up on the i?
It might be easiser to use rsync to push it out to some other system
and grab it from there instead of grabbing it from System i directly.
I respect the i a great deal in its proper role: mission-critical
database applications. For everything else, I sometimes handle the
system like everyone else seems to: get the data onto something else
and deal with it there! :)
