I figured out the problem.
The folder on the network drive, pointed to by /var/lib/BackupPC, did not have rx permissions for "other". This prevented root from going in there to do things.
I hope no one spent too much time pondering this, and thank you for the time you did.
BTW Does anyone know how the BackupPC_Admin executable is built from the BackupPC_Admin.pl script?
-rwsr-x---. 1 backuppc apache 6468 Jan 20 11:40
BackupPC_Admin -rwxr-x---. 1 backuppc apache 3993 Jan 20 11:40 BackupPC_Admin.pl
What distribution/version are you running? That looks like a suid wrapper to start the perl script as backuppc when run under apache.
I see, so I should be able to put print statements into the perl script to see where things are hanging.
I am running fedora 18, 32-bit x86 Package BackupPC-3.2.1-11.fc18.i686
and I spoke too soon about fixing the problem :-( Here is a description of the problem, when choosing "archive" from the localhost/backuppc drop-down menu.
-- When the LOCK file is in the BackupPC/pc/archive folder, the GUI hangs. -- If I first remove the LOCK file from the BackupPC/pc/archive folder, the GUI returns, fine.
ls -l BackupPC/pc/archive -rw-r-----. 1 backuppc backuppc 0 May 11 02:59 LOCK -rw-r-----. 1 backuppc backuppc 0 May
11 03:00 LOG.052013
ls -ld BackupPC/pc/archive drwxrwxrwx. 2 backuppc backuppc 4096 May 11 08:26
My new network drive is a D-LINK DNS-320L. The two 1 TB drives are set up as a redundant RAID-1, and am using NFS to mount the share containing what /var/lib/BackupPC is pointing to. (This setup is identical to what I was using successfuly iwth a WD MyBookworld 1TB non-RAID drive).
selinux is set as permissive.
Thanks, Norm

Do your NFS mount with the "nolock" flag in your fstab entry. I had an identical setup (though oddly enough, I went *from* the 320 to the sharespace =). ) and that cured the issue.
