If you are really stuck to backup images, and very large ones, with
large amounts of changes, then you may simply need to look for a
different tool. Backuppc may not do what you need (at least not yet)...

Or, investigate using zfs as the filesystem for the backuppc storage.
Apparently that can do block level de-duplication.... Though I still
found backuppc to be very slow when backing up a large file with small
changes (using rsync).
