A commercial tool much like BackupPC is Crashplan.
http://www.crashplan.com/
It's remarkably good; and one of the features where it wins over backuppc is
in its ability to throttle bandwidth usage so that it doesn't interfere with
user operations. Admittedly it does this via a dedicated client (which
didn't go very far when someone tried building it for BackupPC).
It also deals well with locked files right out of the box.
