I'm not sure what those 'unknown type' errors mean or if they are a 
problem, but the tape device may need writes to be blocked into 
multiples of a certain size that you may be able to see or set with the 
'mt' program.   If you have enough disk space you can archive to a file, 
then use dd with obs=xx to write in appropriate sized blocks for the 
tape.  If not, there may be some way to get the equivalent in the output 
pipeline - but I doubt if it will keep a tape streaming very well.
