Change the rsync or tar invocation to include the --one-file-system 
option.  This will stop at any mount point and also avoid picking up DVD 
s or USB external drives someone might have connected.  Then you have to 
add explicit runs for each mount point that you do want backed up and be 
sure you update that when your filesystem layout changes.

That's not backuppc specific, it is good advice for any backup technique 
since the most likely failure is the drive itself.

This still doesn't protect against all the ways you might lose data, 
for example an operator or software error that does the equivalent of 
'cd /; rm -rf *', or a site disaster.   Some people do use multiple 
external drives, rotating them offsite, or various means of copying the 
archived files to an offsite location or drives that can be rotated.
