i've posted somethine related to this before, but i still haven't
really found a solution...

i'm having a very difficult time getting a full backup to complete. i
have a backuppc server that mounts 3 directories (A-F/,G-N/,O-Z/, see
logs) from a file server. the backuppc server stores the backups to a
NAS device which is also mounted to the backuppc server on
/var/lib/backuppc. i was using rsync to do the transferring from the
file server to the backuppc server. the NAS device is mounted via NFS.
basically the full backup just does not complete. sometimes it does,
sometimes it doesn't. but for the past 7 days i have been getting
'child exited prematurely' errors and have yet to get a successful
full backup.

i thought it may be having something to do with rsync. so i switched
to smb transfer method on june 12 (see logs). thats when it actually
managed to backup ALMOST all 3 directories before deciding to error
out again. the total size for all 3 directories is about 490GB. i have
another file server that i am backing up with no problem and with the
same setup (using smb, not rsync). but this file server is much
smaller, only about 115GB. i see NO difference between the 115GB
server and the 490GB server except for their size. both are being
mounted with smb and transferred to the SAME NAS device (which is
mounted with NFS).

i've read about increasing the $Conf{ClientTimeout}. mine is set at 259000 secs.

the only thing i can think of that i haven't tried yet is the
following: i can mount the 3 directories from the file server onto the
backuppc server and store the backup files directly onto the backuppc
server itself. this would eliminate storing the backup files on the
mounted NAS. this should reduce chance of errors related to
transfers....
