instead of using the entry in /etc/hosts, just put the IP in client alias in the hosts config file.  backuppc uses nmblookup to resolve IP from HOSTNAME and nmblookup does not check /etc/hosts.

If you set the dhcp option to 0 in the backuppc host file and have some
other way of resolving the name (your /etc/hosts entery) it should not
try to use nmblookup.
