An update. I changed to an older version of GNU tar, this time 1.13.94
(it was one of the closest in the 1.13 series they had at
Sunfreeware.com; if worst comes to worse, I'll build a copy of it
myself). Still no joy, though I'm using "include" with the following
sequence in the stanzas I had before:
include "./1??"
etc.
I've set up to use the "exclude" statement tonight.
