Yes, and then just set it in the user amanda's crontab to run every 
night in the wee hours, while you're getting a good nights sleep.

How are you installing amanda?  From tarball, or some package manager?

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules.  I do use spamassassin too. :-)
