Accented filenames (non ACSII characters)

Hello folks,
I'm having problems recovering files that use non ASCII characters in
their naming.
Here's an example: 'nom fichier égaré.txt'
Does anyone have a similar experience?
Here's what I'm using:
Backup Server:
SGI Origin 300 (Irix 6.5.26)
Amanda 2.4.4p2
tar (GNU tar) 1.13.25
