Duh, I was using the wrong patch, the correct one does indeed apply.

But it gives me a strange advisory I've not seen before just as the 
compile starts when using my script to configure and build it:

cd .. && /bin/sh /home/amanda/amanda-2.4.5b1-20050214/config/missing 
--run autoheader
rm -f stamp-h1
touch config.h.in

And then it continues with the build without further complaints.
And an amcheck returns no errors.

Further results as they become available.  Stay tuned as they say, I 
might need a transfusion here, playing with all this bleeding edge 
stuff. :-)
