Have you tried reading the debugfiles of amcheck and maybe
(I've not used it) of chg-scsi?

They are probably in the /tmp/amanda directory.

Have you tried running chg-scsi directly?
If that is what you are trying to debug,
why invoke it from another program?
You may have to run it from the config dir,
not just any dir.
