I found a message dated Fri, 19 Dec 2003 (holding disk and rait) from someone who seems to have the configuration I need working.

tapedev "rait:{file:/archive/Weekly,tape:/dev/tape}"
I'll give this a jingle and see how it works.

The notion that the RAIT capability to mirror a backup might
be used for this purpose has been mentioned in the list though
I've not heard of anyone reporting an attempt, success, or failure.
