The tapetype definition isn't really "binding" in any way -- it's how big 
you think the tape is.  But, yes, you should be getting more than that per 
tape.  I'd suspect that hardware compression is turned on.  When you 
hardware compress already compressed data, it blows up.  You can check the 
compression status of the drive with 'tapeinfo', which comes with mtx.
