Is the host name in those files client99 or client99.some.thing.com?
It must match what amanda/amcheck is looking for.
Who is owner and where is the .amandahosts file (amanda user home?)?
What are its permissions (try read/write for amanda owner only)?

Is hde1 a device file or a symbolic link to one? If the latter,
check the permissions/ownership of the target, not the link.
Network/firewall problems?
Check the debug logs on the client (/tmp/amanda/*) for perhaps more info.
