I think that was a misunderstanding.  If you're backing up
filesystems using dump, they don't need to be mounted.  But
you're asking about backing up *to* disk; the destination does
have to be mounted.

(Actually, perhaps one could chop a big disk into a bunch of
"tape-sized" partitions, and tell Amanda to back up to the raw
partitions by configuring chg-multi with the /dev/sdcX pathnames.
But even if you could make it work, I'm not sure it'd be worth
the bother...)
