Well, given that current is 2.4.20... It's also not a release kernel (note the pre). I know nothing about Debian, but I'd strongly recommend upgrading at least to a released 2.2 series kernel (it's actually still maintained -- 2.2.25 just came out to fix the recent ptrace vulnerability) or to a more recent Debian release with a 2.4 series kernel.

After I update to the kernel 2.4.20 the recover works. Thanks to all that helps.
