First off: when using server side software compression, does amanda remember what compression rates it achieved for a filesystem in the past and use it for estamates in the future? If not, does this seem like a reasonable thing to try to do?

Just started testing with using software compression on the server (trying not to impact the clients too much), and got the following result:

Output Size (meg) 27246.3 27246.0 0.2
Original Size (meg) 78571.4 78568.4 3.1
Avg Compressed Size (%) 34.7 34.7 8.0 (level:#disks ...)

Tape Size (meg) 27246.9 27246.1 0.8
Tape Used (%) 68.1 68.1 0.0 (level:#disks ...)

A lot of file systems were not backed up that could have been because the planner rejected them. I'd like to be able to operate in a mode where it kept dumping until the tape was full, but then threw away whatever was left (i.e. - no amflush -> inefficient use of another tape).

Damn, with all these requests it looks like I'm going to have to start doing some coding :-).

Finally: anyone know how fast of a server is required to compress at 5MB/s? (I'm doing a lot of dumps direct to tape and turning on compression has incredibly impacted performance)
