But, this would be a problem with UNIX also. UNIX always allows
multiple people to read the same file. I believe it even allows
multiple people to write to the same file which of course has major
problems. I'm trying to understand why amanda will not backup Windows
files over SAMBA that are already opened by another program on that
Windows machine. It doesn't make much sense to me since I'm pretty sure
that multiple programs can have the same file open on Windows and
multiple people can read the same file at the same time over SAMBA
networking.

Is this an issue where amanda is able to protect itself on UNIX -
preventing people from modifying a file while it's backing it up, but it
can't do the same type of mechanism for Windows machines over SAMBA?

Any info you can provide would be helpful
