So enough space for the entire mailbox database who contains the individual 
items to restore , but not space for the entire database .  Correct ?

Hi Robert,

The latest versions work the same way. Data Protection for Exchange mailbox 
restore uses the supported interfaces of Exchange to do this.
This means that the entire mailbox database is restored into a recovery 
database and the individual items are extracted using MAPI.
That means you need enough temporary space to hold the entire mailbox database 
and transaction logs.
You can use the "TEMPDBRestorepath" and "TEMPLOGRestorepath"
options to point them to a location of your choice.
