We used to see similar problems when we used TDP for Microsoft SQL Server
on one of our client systems. One of the database backups arrived as a
single file with a size of about 15 gigabytes. The arrival of this file
was treated as a single transaction which lasted for hours. Recovery log
space allocated during the transaction was tied up until the transaction
finally ended. I don't know whether TDP for R/3 would be subject to the
same sort of pathalogical behavior.
