You can sort of tell this on the server side by doing a query like this:

q actlog begind=-1 search=nodename

By looking that time entries for the hits you get if you see a definite time
pattern, say every six hours, you can probably assume polling.  If you see
only a single hit or perhaps none, you can either assume prompted (and the
client didn't start its scheduler in the previous 24 hours) or the client
scheduler daemon/service isn't running.

Not terribly scientific, but it helps to get you close to the answer.
