Tom,

The only time I have done a restore of this magnitude I was using an
alternative product as my utility.  I made no progress until I
manually allocated all the /oracle/sid/sapdata* directories.  From
that point on the backint utility was able to create the appropriate
subdirectories but my memory is that the messages were similar to what
you have reported here.

Some things I would (and you may have already) check are:
Is you directory structure in place (see above)?
Are you running as <sid>adm?  Which one; originating system or target
system?
I am not sure how to check the name of a file or directory's owner,
but you can, and probably should, take ownership by the current
<sid>adm.
Have you restored the most current control file from the original
system to your backup system (in all locations)?
