Hi All,

We were doing weekly archive fro 20 TB file system in Data domain. Data Domain has become full and we need alternate solutions to do weekly archive.

Scenorio here: We copy the Production file system from prod server to TSM server server (20 TB) every day to offload the backup from production . So the 20 TB file system was mounted in TSM server and we took archive from there. We used to face often communication issues in TSM Server as we faced much load in TSM. Now , We plan to go with Physical tape library to do weekly archive. If we do archive to physical tapes over the LAN then TSM server load will be high. Can we implement Storage agent in TSM server to use LANfree for weekly archive. Please advise.

Or we can mount the file system in someother server and implement storage agent to go to physical libary.

Thanks,
Frank

Is is not recommended to have Storage Agent running on the same server that TSM server is running on.

You are better off bringing up a separate server, loading Storage Agent on it for LAN Free operation.

Hi,

1) 20TB archive weekly? What about creating another node "From_DataDomain_WEEKLY" and run it once a week as an incremental backup?
2) it is not allowed to have StorageAgent and TSM server on the same machine (installers prohibit that - it can be done manually but is not worth the effort) - as far as I can imagine the load on the server (hardware) is the same - the TSM DB needs to handle the same metadata as well
3) not sure if storage agent and LANFree helps you at all - LANFree is for huge amount of data IN SMALL NUMBER of files - if your DataDomain holds filesystem with millions of small files, then LANFree is going to be slower than normal LAN based approach. Anyhow - if the DD acts as a NAS, then the "proxy" client with the SAgent still needs to get the data from it over LAN - so the LANFree advantage is lost again.

Hope I understood the problem ....

Hi All,

Data growth has gone upto 25 TB now. Daily incremental itself takes 15 TB as it takes 30 hours to complete backup (500 GB per hour). So we are able to backup only 3 days data in a week and one weekly archive.
1. I suggessted to increase TSM server memory to increase the throuput.
2. Mount the file system in some other server and take Lan free backup.

But the TSM expert it is possible to implement the LAN FREE on TSM server itslef. It will not have any performance issues ,we just need to add seperate tape drives for LAN FREE.

TSM server version 6.3.2.0 hosted on RHEL 6.2 V. There are 40 client are running in TSM server.
Datadomain used for Library.
memory : 128 GB - Physical
SWap sapce : 128 GB.

Please advise if we will have any issues if we implement storage agent on TSM server.

As mentioned, bring up a separate environment for the Storage Agent. I have seen all sorts of issues to have the Storage agent collocate with the TSM server.
