We have set up TDP for SAP so that archived redo logs get backed up to two Management Classes. The first copy ends up in a File type Storage Pool on the local site TSM Server which then migrates to a tape Storage Pool on the same TSM server. The second copy ends up in a File type Storage Pool on the local site TSM Server which then migrates to a File type Storage Pool on the remote site TSM Server (i.e. Server to Server, Virtual Volumes). The File type Storage Pool on the remote site TSM Server then migrates to a tape Storage Pool on the same server.

Restores of archived redo logs at the local site using the first copy provide reasonable performance.

However, Disaster Recovery testing has not gone so well. We have recovered the local site TSM server at the remote site using Virtual Volumes without issue. Restoring the archived redo logs from Virtual Volumes has instead performed very poorly. The performance is fine as long as the Virtual Volumes still reside on disk (~30 GB per hour). Once the Virtual Volumes move to tape restore performance is truly terrible (~3 GB per hour). It appears as if a lot of time is being spent on locating the Virtual Volumes on tape.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?
