Hi,

Is there any detail on what TSM4VE actually does when it comes to isolating the VM for backup. Is there a fraction of a second where the VM is effectively offline?.. closing network connections.. that kind of thing?

Any detail about the low-level functioning of TSM4VE would be useful.

Thanks,
CB

The technology behind VM backup is base on image snapshots in which TSM relies on VM Ware provided APIs. There is no time that the VM is offline for this.

I ran into an issue with this, but it was not directly related to TSM. The VMWare API is called by TSM to take the snapshot, but the time it took for MS VSS to quiece the VM took so long that users noticed. In a few isolated cases it took up to a minute to take the snapshot, during which time the VM was paused. I have been asked to find a way to take strictly crash consistent snapshots now without bothering to quiece the VM.
