In general principles: the format of the device should be transparent to the TSM version as long as drivers are there to support it, and generally drivers for a given technology are one and the same.
The format of how data is written to tape is an internal matter that is handled by the tape drive.
I just upgraded a customer that pulled their LTO 4 drives and replaced them with LTO 5 drives.
The customer was at V5.5.1.0. I had to move them up to V5.5.4.2 (I do not recommend V5.5.4.0 as it introduced some timing problems and mount denied errors that are corrected in V5.5.4.2)
In short you must be at V5.5.4.x to get support for LTO 5 drives.
