Hi guys.

We are in a pickle. There was a server wih TSM 5.3.3.0, which we wanted to upgrade to 5.5.7.0. During the installation a log volume disappeared, and the server won't start now. We have tried to restore the database, but it has the version for 5.3.x.x, so it can't be restored in 5.5.x.x.
The main problem is, we can't do a downgrade, because we don't have the necessary binary 5.3.0.0, only fix packets. Does anyone know, how to get the 5.3.0.0 from somewhere?

I am hoping you have the LIC files.

Try ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/server/v5r3/

Thank you very much. I have seen this ftp, sadly, these are only the fix packets, not the base 5.3.0.0

Have you tried installing the binaries on the FTP site? As far as I remember (and hoping I remembered correctly!), we can use this. The only difference is that the older binaries from the FTP site does not have the license files.

You should be able to restore a TSM Server 5.3 database into a TSM Server 5.5.

Before you attempt to start the TSM Server need to run the "dsmserv upgradedb" command so that the TSM Server 5.3 database will be upgrade to the TSM Server 5.5 format.

Good Luck,
Sias

As far as i remember, the install of TSM 5.5 had a point, where it upgraded the DB. When i try to perform the restore, this is, what i get:

If you did a migration upgraded from 5.3 to 5.5, the database would have been automatically upgrade to the 5.5 format.

If we restore a 5.3 database into a 5.5 TSM Server, need to manually run the dsmserv upgradedb .
If not, the TSM Server will not start and produce a message that the "dsmserv upgradedb" need to be run.

What is the full dsmserv restore db command that we are issuing?

Did we perform a fresh install of the TSM Server 5.5?
Did we create new db and log volumes?
If so, did we format the db and log volumes?

Hello.
The command was dsmserv restore db
The install was a fresh install, yes.
The logvolumes and db volumes were the same, as in the old one (except for one, which was missing, that was recreated), the existing ones were not formatted.

Ok after reformatting all the volumes, the restore was possible, and after an upgrade db everything is working fine now.
Thank you all for your help. Deeply appreciated.

Do you have the license file for 5.5 ? I just did the upgrade but used the fixpack files. I don't have the old license file and a week later my server is preventing backup and restores. Passport Advantage doesn't have them anymore. Support no longer has the 5.5 and the sent me to marketing which has produced no help.

I can't upgrade to 6.x or 7 for configuration management reasons so right now we're dead in the water.
