Hi guys,

We have a Windows TSM server running 5.3 (soon to be upgraded to 5.5).

All are clients are 5.3.x.x and I was wondering if there were any known problems if I installed client 5.5.0.6 on the servers?

I have installed 5.5.0.6 on one of our test servers and it looks like everything run smoothly but was not sure if there was anything I should keep an eye on.

Thanks
Fatboy

Hi,

Officially, IBM support client at level N-1, N or N+1 compared to server level. For instance, if your server is a version 5.4, clients at version 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5 are compatible. However, do you know that version 5.3 is already out of support.

For information about compatibility, see the following URL:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docvie...G7&uid=swg21053218&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en

This link should be useful too:

Best regards, Olivier.

Word of caution to those who want to go straight to TSM server 5.5.
There has only been one patch release since distribution - you're diving straight into unknown waters. Review all posts here prior to the big jump.

^ Good point. We are upgrading our test backup servers first to feel it out.

As long as we are on the topic of upgrading..... What is the best way to upgrade 1000 clients from version 5.3 to 5.5 with having to manually touch each one?

I would love to be able to push the upgrade and regedit fix out without having to remote desktop to each one.

Yes - Push the upgrades with an Silent upgrade routine via unattended install msi or unix script.

The process is similar if you push patches throughout your environment. Simply reference your code in your routine and you're golden

There are exceptions to everything...

Platform support update:

Select support for three operating systems was added to TSM 5.4 on April 30, 2008 via special 5.3.6 backup-archive clients and 5.3.6.3 storage agents. These clients and storage agents are supported in TSM 5.4 on only these operating systems, for use with TSM 5.4 and 5.5 servers.

5.3.6 Client download page: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24019078

5.3.6.3 Storage agents: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/.../storage-agent/v5r4/special_platform_support/

Support ends 90 days after the vendor extended defect support ends for the operating system, as listed here:

Windows 2000 - July 2010
Solaris 8 - March 2009
Linux x86 RHEL 3 - October 2010

Do you have any examples of this script? I'm new the scripting world and server patching is done via another team.
