Test tsm server install on linux

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to setup my own test TSM server at work. I would like to do this on Linux and was wondering which free Linux version TSM Server would work best with?

I realize that IBM only support Red Hat and SUSE, however for my test server I don't want to install a proprietary OS.

Hi,

you can download both for free but if you really do not want that, try CEntOS - it is RH clone and works well with TSM

Thanks I was not aware that these were free downloads, i.e. SUSE REDHAT, if for what ever reason they don't work then I will try CENTOS.

I've done test installs on all 3 (all x86_64)
SLES10 sp1 & sp2
RedHat 5.2
CentOS 5.3 and 5.4

Be sure to follow the install guide, it is quite helpful as a few items are not exactly intuitive. I also recommend this doc (sg247718.pdf) - still in "draft"

I have been running TSM Server on both OpenSuSE, Scientific Linux and CentOS without any issue.

the ibm site had tsm fastback software but it failed to install in linux with nothing significant info in log file

You should probably start a new thread for this...
I'm fairly certain you absolutely have to install the client on the server. If you are going to back up DB2, I recommend looking into TDP.

just a comment - there is NO TDP for DB2 - DB2 has built-in capability to backup to TSM. All you need is TSM API

i finally installed the server and client api and configured the system accordingly

but i stuck while configuring the copygroups
i had one doubt about the storage pools
my thought was to make backup in some directory
and not on some tapes , separate drive or else

is it possible to make backup in some destination folder and restore from there ?

Hi,

you do not need tapes - use device class disk to build a stgpool or define new device class of type FILE.
