Structure VMWare backup using TSM

Hi Ramon,
I am also new to tsm and vmware backups. This is a useful ppt if you are using TSM for VE and want to get a better idea of how it works. If that is the case I am assuming the center is a proxy and you would not need to install client on each vm guest even if you are doing a traditional backup.

Hi,
Main thing is to think, how you will backup your VMs. And what are requirements for restore.
Are there some services that requires online agent.
Mainly, you can backup your VMs just like physical machines, installing TSM client to each VM.
TSM client from 6.2.3 understands that it's a VM, when you during install select VMware integration.
TSM TDP for VE is good, if you like to do off-host, in-quest and instant restores.
Backups are still done with TSM client...
If you have TB licenses with TSM, it's included. But if not, it will take some money.
For TDP for VE, check:

Browse to Protecting virtual machines.
If you are going to install a proxy node for VM backups, if you do not present VMware Datastores to that server, backups will go through network. VMware VADP can also use SAN- connections for backups, if you present Datastores to physical proxy server or use a VM, that is in ESX that sees all Datastores, as a proxy server. But from proxy, backups go through network if storage agent is not used.
Also you don't have to necessary install TSM client to VMs.
And TSM server configuration changes so, that you will only have to register proxy server, all VM backups will go under that. If you have requirement for several proxy servers, you can also register a VMware datacenter node name and backup all VMs with proxy server using asnode=VMdatacenternodename. So you don't have to remember proxy server name that have been used in backup.

It demonstrate which versions of vSphere you can backup with what specific version in TSM. The most important note that many mess is that you require at least TSM 6.3 client to backup vSphere.
