slow Netapp restore

When attempting a netapp restore of one file, why does it take 20 minutes to half an hour to recover the file. Also, where can I look to see the progress of the restore. It seems very "black boxish". i.e. very hard to capture any sort of performance statistics. Anyone know where I can find an NDMP/TSM primer. Thanks for any help. NDMP newbie.

A restore of a file or multiple files using NDMP can take as long as the time that was needed to complete the backup of that NAS volume. When you browse the TOC or Table Of Content and select a file for restore, the TSM Server knows in which NDMP backup volume that file is located and needs to read the complete NDMP backup volume to locate the file or files and then restore the files. This means that if it took for example 2 hours to backup a of a NAS volume of 300GB, it can take up to 2 hours to restore a single file from that volume.
