Select statement to search TOC?

Indeed...the TOC file is stored as a single object - when queried during a restore the TOC file is unpacked into a temporary table and scanned at query time.

NDMP has a long way to go with TSM.

Its a trade-off, really - if you stored the TOC in a persistent table there'd be significant TSM database bloat involved, with all of the expiration overhead. Assume you've got a big NAS infrastructure with 100s of millions of objects on it...one of the big advantages of storing the data as an NDMP image in TSM is that you have the tape overhead without the management overhead. All of that advantage goes away if you have a persistent store of references within each image.

I can see why the devs/designers chose to implement a runtime based method.
