Hi

I Have a a issue with a HBA connection to a switch, the Port on the switch has a status of no_light could anyone help with this?

no_light normally means that the cable is disconnected or faulty. Check the cable connections at both ends and if it is connected, replace it.

Hi,

Also check the SFP's if it's not the cable.

Check the cables and SFP. Reseat both. If reseat fails replace cable. If not cable replace SFP

Hi Guy thanks for advice but none of the suggestions have worked!!!! Any other ideas

Onto what type of hardware is this connected to ? Is the HBA on a aix server? windows? Is the hba "discovered" by the OS? Did it work before or is this a new connection?

its on a w2k3 64 bit server, it has worked before

So you have replaced the cable and replaced the SFP?

Next step would be to move the SFP to another port on the switch. Do you have any policies enforced on the switch to disable ports? Do you see laser light out of the SFP? Do you see laser light at the end of the cable near the HBA? Is this going through a patch panel? If so, could the ST connectors be reversed? Do you see laser light out of the HBA?

if there is no_light, remove the lc connector from servers hba and check the hba's port you'll must see the red light inside of hba's sfp. if you see that light on hba it's ok on the server side, just connect the lc connector of your cable again to this hba... and remove it's lc connector from san switch and check the cables lc connector, you must see the red light if it's already lit on hba. if not change the cable, if there is a light check the san switch's sfp to see that little red light.

Also make sure that you're using the right kind of cable. Some cables are for long runs (longer than 10k meters) or different kinds of HBAs (DWDM).

Could you list the problem resolution steps you have taken so far.

ie.
1. resat cable - no change
2. resat SPF - no change
3. replace SPF - no change
4. replace cable - no change
5. move cable to another port - etc etc

If you are using a CISCO SAN Switch... Did you enable the port?... Stupid question.. but I had to ask!.

Are you able to log into the Cisco SAN switch? Confirm the settings, proper VLAN, auto-detection 2G/4G, etc. and make certain the port is enable. Additionally, if you have access to the SAN switch, setup another port and see if there are connectivity to that particular port.
